Phosphorus is another extremely important element in the nutrition of microfauna and corals. If present in sufficient quantities, it promotes "biological filtration" and improves the color and health of the coral.

Bacteria and other microscopic organisms need phosphorus in sufficient quantities to absorb carbon and nitrogen.

With the increased efficiency of filtration systems, aquariums with low and very low nutrients are becoming more common. These systems are often phosphorus deficient. If a system is nutrient deficient, it means that the "biological filtration" is not working as efficiently as it should and nutrients such as NO3 are likely to rise and become pollutants unless other forms of filtration are used.

PhosPlus supports microbial growth and reproduction and enhances biological filtration by allowing microscopic plankton and bacteria to absorb carbon and nitrogen. These bacteria can then be exported via mechanical filtration or used as food by other organisms in our aquariums such as sponges, corals, mussels, tunicates, etc.

PhosPlus is a natural source of PO4 that can be dosed to the aquarium in a controlled manner to achieve an ideal PO4 value. We recommend using PhosPlus to achieve a PO4 value of approximately 0.04 mg/l.

Before dosing PhosPlus, we recommend using reliable and accurate phosphate test kits to determine the phosphate level in the aquarium.

1 ml PhosPlus increases the PO4 value by ~0.01 ppm in 100 liters of aquarium water.

After the phosphate value has been determined, we recommend increasing the PO4 value by only 0.01-0.02 ppm per day by dosing the desired amount and waiting 24 hours to test the PO4 value. This procedure should be repeated until the desired PO4 value is reached.

If PO4 is added and after 24 hours both NO3 and PO4 levels do not decrease, your system may be carbon starved.
