(Nitrate and phosphate remover)

In order for bacteria and other microscopic organisms to absorb nitrogen and phosphorus, carbon must be available in sufficient quantities.

With the increased efficiency of filtration systems, aquariums with low and very low nutrient levels are becoming more common. These systems are often carbon deficient. When a system is carbon deficient, it means that "biological filtration" is not running as efficiently as it should and nutrients such as NO3 and PO4 are likely to enter the air and become airborne pollutants unless other filtration methods are used.

CarboPlus increases the rate of microbial growth and reproduction and improves biological filtration by allowing microscopic plankton and bacteria to consume nitrate and phosphate. These bacteria can then be exported via mechanical filtration or used as food by other organisms in our aquariums such as sponges, corals, mussels, tunicates, etc.

CarboPlus is a natural source of biologically safe carbon and replaces flammable sources such as ethanol or vodka.

When starting the dosage of CarboPlus we advise to start with 1 ml per 100 liters per day and increase this to 3 ml per 100 liters per day if necessary. Measure NO3 and PO4 regularly with reliable test kits. If these are present in the correct ratio (C 106:N 16:P 1) they should decrease over time to the desired values and eventually to 0 ppm (if nothing is done).

Once NO3 and PO4 reach recommended levels, reduce the dose to ensure the nutrients stay around those levels and do not drop to 0 ppm (our recommended levels are NO3 ~5 ppm and PO4 ~0.04 ppm).

If either NO3 or PO4 is trending towards 0 ppm while the other is above 0 ppm, your system is likely limited by the depleted nutrient. In this case, the existing nutrient will tend to not drop or to rise over time. Dose NitroPlus or PhosPlus to correct this deficiency and optimize your "biological filtration".

If you want a "high nutrient in, high nutrient out" system, you can continue dosing the maximum daily dose of CarboPlus. However, you will likely need to dose NitroPlus and PhosPlus to ensure proper nutrient ratios/levels.
