This filter material is a housing and also food for filter bacteria. They only need oxygen to breathe. Their ability to break down nitrate into components nitrogen (N) and oxygen (O) meets this need.
In order for nitrate to be used, oxygen must have a low value in the water (slow flow recommended). The reduction takes place as follows: NO3> NO2> N2O / N2 (nitrogen is discharged to the atmosphere).
For a quick activation we recommend our live filter bacteria used "biorein" or another bacterial preparation.
Info: You can easily test the quality of this filter material. Take a glass or bottle with a cap, fill it halfway with the filter material and then fill it with nitrate-contaminated aquarium water. Make sure that no air remains before closing it.
The bacteria in the water find an environment with little oxygen. Good filter material can now be colonized by the organisms and also used as food. In the first week there will be no effect because in order to eliminate larger amounts of nitrate, the amount of bacteria must increase.
