Zeolites are minerals that belong to the tectosilicates. Natural zeolites can contain a lot of water. When heated, this water boils out, hence the name "zeolite", from the Greek "zein", boiling, and "lithos", stone. There are around fifty natural zeolites and more than a hundred artificial zeolites. Common natural zeolites are natrolite, heulandite and stil beet. Artificial zeolites are used in, among other things, detergent, cat litter and catalysis.

A zeolite is made up of silicon, aluminum and oxygen atoms. These atoms form tetraders, which in turn can form cages. This gives the zeolite a very porous structure. The structure of a zeolite is, however, very regular and the connected cages form a kind of channels. These canals can be seen as corridors and elevator shafts in an apartment building. The molecules can contain small molecules (such as water) and ions. The ions are often needed to compensate for the negatively charged structure of Si, Al and O. Heating the zeolite at high temperature can cause the structure to collapse. Further heating of this amorphous material can cause nucleation of a new ceramic phase
