The Paracanthurus hepatus, better known as the blue tang, Picasso surgeonfish or the blue surgeonfish, is a striking and popular fish in marine aquariums. This species became famous worldwide through the movies "Finding Nemo" and "Finding Dory".

Appearance : Paracanthurus hepatus has a bright blue body with a striking black marking that resembles a palette knife, and a bright yellow caudal fin. The colors and markings make this fish very recognizable.

Behavior : Paracanthurus hepatus is known for its active and social behavior. They like to swim throughout the tank and sometimes hide in rock formations and coral structures.

Diet

In the wild, the blue tang feeds primarily on algae. In aquariums, they should be fed a varied diet including algae, seaweed, and enriched foods such as spirulina, and plant foods. They will also accept standard fish foods such as flakes and pellets, but a diet rich in plant matter is essential for their health.

Care requirements

Tank Conditions : Due to their active nature and size, blue tangs require a spacious aquarium, preferably at least 100-120 gallons (400-500 liters). They need plenty of swimming room and plenty of hiding places such as live rock.

Swimming Space : Provide ample swimming space and structural hiding places to reduce stress and promote natural behavior.

Compatibility

Tank Mates : Blue tangs are generally peaceful and can coexist with other reef safe fish and invertebrates. However, they can become territorial towards conspecifics or other surgeonfish, especially in smaller tanks.

Behavior : Although they are usually peaceful, they can sometimes be aggressive towards other fish of similar shape or color. Provide plenty of space and hiding places to minimize aggression.

Considerations

Health : Paracanthurus hepatus is susceptible to parasites such as marine ich (Cryptocaryon irritans). Maintaining a stable and clean environment is crucial to preventing disease. Regular quarantine of new additions to the tank can help keep disease at bay.

Dietary Management : Provide a diet rich in plant material to support their immune system and mimic their natural diet. Food enrichment with vitamins and trace elements can further improve their health.

The Paracanthurus hepatus is a beautiful and captivating addition to a large marine aquarium, known for its vibrant colors and active behavior. With the right care and environment, they can be a healthy and happy addition to any reef community.
