Halichoeres hortulanus (Checkerboard wrasse)

The young marbled wrasse, also known as the checkerboard wrasse, is white with stripes, spots, and black blotches. As it matures, it becomes silver with a striking black checkerboard pattern on its body. The dorsal fin and tail are yellow, and the face is light green with orange to pink striped markings.

A 100-gallon (470-liter) aquarium or larger with a closed lid, 2-3 inches (5-7.5 cm) of sand substrate for hiding if frightened, and other peaceful wrasses, including its own species, are a suitable environment. In the aquarium, it eats fireworms and pyramidellid snails to protect corals and mussels it doesn't bother. Larger specimens, however, may eat smaller ornamental shrimp and crabs. It may also eat dust flies, wild shrimp, tube worms, and flatworms.

The Marble/Hortulanus Wrasse diet should consist of vitamin-enriched frozen Mysis shrimp, vitamin-enriched frozen brine shrimp, and other meaty foods, along with high-quality sea food in the form of flakes and sea pellets.
