Cryptocentrus cinctus, commonly known as the Yellow Watchman Goby

The Cryptocentrus cinctus, also known as the yellow watcher's goby in Dutch, is a small but striking saltwater fish known for its unique behavior and partnership with pistol shrimp (Alpheus spp.). This species is not only beautiful to watch but also offers a fascinating glimpse into natural underwater symbiosis.

Features

• Length : Up to approx. 8–10 cm
• Colour : Bright yellow to mustard yellow, sometimes with light blue dots
• Behavior : Peaceful, shy, but strongly territorial when combined with its shrimp partner
• Special feature : Often lives together with a pistol shrimp in a shared burrow

Habitat in the wild

The Cryptocentrus cinctus lives on shallow sandy bottoms in lagoons and reefs of the Indo-Pacific region. It doesn't dig its own burrows, but relies on the digging skills of a pistol shrimp, with which it forms a close partnership: the shrimp digs and maintains the burrow, while the goby stands guard and warns the shrimp of danger with tail and fin movements.

In the aquarium

• Tank size : Minimum 60 litres, preferably with a sandy substrate and plenty of hiding places
• Temperature : 24–27 °C
• Salinity : 1.020 – 1.025
• Diet : Eats small pieces of shrimp, mysis, artemia and special bottom fish food
• Compatibility : Peaceful towards other reef inhabitants, but aggressive towards conspecifics in small aquariums
