Seachem Reef Carbonate

Reef Carbonate ™ is a concentrated (4,000 meq / L) optimized mix of carbonate and bicarbonate salts, designed to restore and maintain alkalinity in the reef aquarium. Calcium and carbonates are essential for all coral growth. If one of the two defects is present, coral growth will stop, followed by a rapid decline in coral health. To prevent this, you must provide carbonates (Reef Carbonate ™) and calcium (Reef Advantage Calcium ™ or Reef Complete®).

While competing products simply use sodium bicarbonate, Reef Carbonate ™ is made with a mixture of carbonate and bicarbonate salts. This mix of salts results in Reef Carbonate ™, which produces a pK of roughly 9.0 in salt water (higher than competing products). In a closed reef system, the multitude of organic substances produced by reef inhabitants tend to force the pH down, but the advantage of Reef Carbonate's higher pK is a pH stabilization around 8.3-8.4. Formulas from competing products make them unable to make such a claim, so the pH will always fall below the desired levels for a reef aquarium.

Used as directed, Reef Carbonate ™ will not deplete calcium, magnesium or strontium, which tends to precipitate with increasing alkalinity. Reef alkalinity must be maintained at 3-5 meq / L (8-14 dKH). Alkality cannot fall under 2 meq / L.

Use of Seachem Reef Carbonate

BEGINNER: Use 1 cap (5 ml) per 80 L (20 gallons) twice a week. Best if diluted in a cup of fresh water, then added. Check the alkalinity every 2 weeks and adjust the amount or frequency accordingly.

ADVANCED: Check the alkalinity and follow the above addition schedule until the alkalinity is adjusted to 4-5 meq / L. Each ml contains at least 4 meq alkalinity. Every 5 ml / 80 L increases the alkalinity by approximately 0.25 meq / L. Quantity or frequency can be adjusted, but do not exceed 20 ml / 80 L per day. Next, use as required to maintain alkalinity.

EXPERT: Set a continuous drip system after determining the alkalinity consumption. Use the following formula to determine how much to add to your top water: m = va / 4 (m = ml of product to add to top-off water, v = volume of tank in liters, a = quantity increases the alkalinity in meq / l). For example, if you want to increase alkalinity by 1 meq / L in a 200-liter tank, add (200x1) / 4 = 50 ml to the top water. [For reference: 1 gallon = 3.8 L].

NOTES: It is best to gradually pour in the vicinity of strong water movement. Do not add anything to a drain pan or other area with slow water exchange. Use MultiTest: ™ Marine pH & Alkality to measure total alkalinity or Reef Status ™ Magnesium, Carbonate and Borate to measure carbonate alkalinity.

DO NOT OVERDOSE: Excessive alkalinity may increase the loss of calcium, magnesium and strontium. Do not mix directly with a calcium, magnesium or strontium supplement. It is best to add calcium and carbonate additives on alternating days or with an interval of at least 30 minutes.
