Seachem Catappa Leaves

Catappa leaves from the Indian almond tree (Terminalia catappa) help mimic the natural environment of bettas, shrimp, and other aquarium inhabitants. When added to an aquarium, they release tannins and other organic compounds that help lower pH levels and lighten the water's color. These conditions mimic habitats with acidic water and abundant leaf litter. As catappa leaves decompose, beneficial microorganisms grow on the leaf surface, providing a natural food source for shrimp, snails, and newly hatched fish.

Usage

Add 1-2 leaves per 20 liters (5 US gallons). Remove and replace them monthly or as needed. Catappa leaves may initially float, but will sink after 2-3 days. To make an extract, boil 3 grams (about two and a half leaves) in 1 liter (1 US quart) of water for 10 minutes, or until the desired color is achieved. Allow the extract to cool to aquarium temperature and pour it directly into the aquarium or mix it with the prepared water for water changes. When using for the first time, gradually add the extract over 2-3 days and monitor the pH to ensure it remains within the range suitable for the aquarium inhabitants. Chemical filter media such as activated carbon can remove substances from Catappa leaves.
