In high concentration they are harmful to any aquarium biotope. the DOC skimmer effectively removes these compounds from the water circuit, better than a bio-mechanical filter, meaning that by removing proteins before bacterial degradation, crystal clear water is retained and an increase in nitrate and phosphate is reduced.
