Protein skimmers are among the most important technical devices in a saltwater aquarium and have the important task of removing organic pollutants, such as protein compounds, from the water cycle before they are converted into nitrogen (e.g. nitrate) via biological decomposition processes. By adding food, organic waste, dead algae, animals and microorganisms, the saltwater aquarium is continuously enriched with protein compounds. Since a large proportion of these compounds are broken down by nitrification, which occurs faster than denitrification, harmful nitrate accumulates over time at high levels of pollution. The Cube Skimmer removes proteins (protein compounds) and inorganic and organic molecules from the water before bacteria can break them down. This relieves the aquarium water and permanently reduces the nitrate content.
