calcification ™ is a concentrated (140,000 mg / l) optimized blend of ionically and biologically available gluconate-complexed calcium that is designed to restore and maintain calcium to levels found in natural seawater without affecting pH. These two forms of calcium are combined in calcification ™ to offer the hobbyist a convenient way to ensure optimum coral growth and health.

Ionic calcium is easily available, while gluconate-complexed calcium has several advantages. The uncharged calcium in calcification ™ is easily absorbed with less physiological work than is necessary for the absorption of ionic calcium. With calcification ™, it is not necessary to maintain the high concentrations of calcium (around 450 mg / L or more) that are often recommended by others. In fact, excellent growth of corals and coral algae is achieved with a total calcium concentration of only 380 mg / l. Used up to four times recommended maintenance dose, the gluconate polymer will not accumulate or stimulate the growth of unwanted algae. The polymer itself is beneficial as a food source, not only for corals and other invertebrates, but also for denitrifying bacteria, thereby promoting the natural anaerobic denitrification process in living rock and other substrate. Furthermore, the use of this gluconate polymer allows calcium, strontium and magnesium to be used more easily than they would otherwise, and also helps stabilize them in solution without depleting alkalinity.

Some prefer not to use complexed calcium due to concerns about adding organic substances to the aquarium. This is not a valid concern. The amount of organic substances to which complexed calcium has been added is insignificantly small compared to the organic substances released by most reef animals, even with an approach without nutrients and without nutrients. Because complexed calcium products use lactate or gluconate, the naive misconception that these products contain sugars has arisen. Although these components are related to sugars, they are oxidized aldehydes that do not react or behave like sugars. Polygluconate contains no nitrogen or phosphorus, so it is biologically impossible to lead to algae growth in a well-maintained reef system.
