Stenopus hispidus (Barber shrimp)

Barber shrimps are useful and beautiful animals that often belong to the permanent clean-up crew of the marine aquarium. The Banded Shrimp grows to about 6 cm and mainly eats leftover food, but it can also catch sick fish and shrimp.

Shrimp, like lobsters and crabs, only have an external skeleton that becomes too small as they grow, once every few days they crawl out of this skeleton and hide until the new skeleton has hardened, during this time the animal is very vulnerable and will hide.

This species lives mainly at night and needs many hiding places, it is best kept solitary.
