Lysmata amboinensis (cleaning shrimp)

Cleaner shrimp are useful and beautiful animals that often belong to the regular cleaning crew of the marine aquarium. The Pacific Cleaner Shrimp grows to about 6 cm and mainly eats parasites and dead skin cells from a fish.

They usually live as a couple and have a so-called cleaning station where the fish pass by and wait patiently for the shrimp to do their work.

Shrimp have just like lobsters and crabs only an external skeleton which becomes too small as they grow, once every few days they crawl out of this skeleton and hide until the new skeleton has hardened, during this time the animal is very vulnerable and will hide.
