Pseudaxinella polycapella is a sponge species found in European waters, particularly along rocky coasts and in sheltered underwater areas. These sponges are soft, often yellow-orange to brown, and form branched, bushy structures. They play an important role in the ecosystem by filtering water, contributing to clarity and nutrient circulation.

Like many sponges, Pseudaxinella polycapella provides a habitat for small invertebrates and forms a link in the complex biodiversity of the seabed.

Characteristics of Pseudaxinella polycapella

  • Form : Branched, shrubby sponge often growing in clumps.
  • Colour : usually yellowish to orange, sometimes light brown.
  • Texture : soft, elastic and slightly slimy to the touch.
  • Surface : irregular with small pores through which water is filtered.
  • Size : Colonies can range from a few centimeters to over 20 cm high.
  • Habitat : Mainly on rocky bottoms, under overhangs and in sheltered areas of the coastal sea.
  • Role in ecosystem : filters water to absorb plankton and organic material; serves as a shelter for small marine animals.
  • Water Quality: They require very stable conditions with clean, running water rich in oxygen and microscopic food.
  • Light sensitivity : Many sponges do not tolerate direct bright light well and prefer to grow in shaded areas.
  • Air Sensitivity : When removed from water, the sponge's channels become clogged with air bubbles, which is usually fatal.
