This handheld colorimeter is designed as a more accurate alternative to chemical test kits, offering fast, accurate pH test results.

The ocean surface pH is normally 7.5 to 8.5 pH.

However, over the years the tendency to acidify decreases by 0.1 to 0.2 pH units / century. Acidification is a result of the absorption of carbon dioxide (CO₂) in seawater and oceans. Carbon dioxide reacts with seawater to produce carbonic acid (H₂CO₃).

pH changes affect the growth, reproduction and communication of marine life. Hydrogen ions tend to bond with carbonate to form bicarbonate. The greater attraction to carbonate over calcium can adversely affect skeletal structure and limit coral growth.
