Agent Green initiates an ion exchange, which uses the attraction between calcium and other alkali metals and phosphate to create insoluble beads. These "beads" are insoluble, inert materials that are harmless to aquatic life. When Agent Green is introduced into a high flow area of the system, it immediately creates a smoky effect in the water. The denser the smoke, the more is being removed. This smokiness is evidence that phosphate is being precipitated out of the system.
