Opistognathus rosenblatti – Blue-spotted Jawfish (DJM Bred)

The Opistognathus rosenblatti , better known as the Blue-spotted Jawfish , is a striking and characterful fish. This species has a yellow to orange head that transitions to a darker body, completely covered with bright blue spots.

This specimen is tank-bred by De Jong Marinelife , which ensures better adaptation to the aquarium and a higher survival rate than wild-caught specimens.

Behavior and character

This jawfish is known for its unique behavior. It actively digs burrows in the bottom and uses its mouth to move sand. Initially, it may be shy, but once accustomed, it will often stick its head out of the burrow to observe its surroundings.

  • Interesting digging and territorial behavior
  • Generally peaceful
  • Can be territorial around its own burrow
  • Prone to springing, cover recommended

Housing

Suitable substrate is essential for this species. Use primarily fine sand, supplemented with coarser material such as coral grit or small pieces of ceramic, so that the fish can build stable burrows.

  • Fine sand as a base
  • Add coarser material for structure
  • Quiet surroundings with ample shelter

Important points to consider

The Blue-spotted Jawfish is naturally a species from temperate waters. Although it can temporarily tolerate higher temperatures, keeping it in tropical aquariums for extended periods is not recommended.

  • Preferably keep in cooler water
  • Not suitable for standard tropical temperatures long-term

Power supply

  • Meat eater (carnivore)
  • Diet: copepods, Artemia, small frozen food
  • Can often get used to dry food such as pellets and flakes.

Additional information

  • Can be kept solitary or as a pair
  • Breeding in an aquarium is possible under good conditions.
  • Very decorative and unique reef fish

The Opistognathus rosenblatti is a special and visually spectacular fish for the advanced aquarist who can take its specific requirements into account.
