Oolites True Bahamas oolitic sand is a unique type of biogenic calcium carbonate that forms naturally on the shores of the Bahamas.
The grains are smooth and spherical. The word oolite literally means egg-shaped. Due to its renewable nature it is a
environmentally friendly alternative to reef sand. It is the ideal substrate for marine, reef and cichlid aquariums. It has an unsurpassed buffering capacity and helps maintain a natural pH of 8.2 without the constant addition of chemicals.
Our Oolites provide a huge habitat for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate reducing bacteria. 1KG/2.2lb, which is equal to 1.5L/0.4 Gallon, provides over 1 million sq. cm. of surface area. The grain size is ideal for reef -, cichlid, fish tanks and refugiums. Another advantage is the lack of silica, which helps prevent diatom blooms in the aquarium.
