The Pufferfish - Arothron nigropunctatus is a striking sight in the marine aquarium. This blackspotted puffer is known for its unique appearance, curious nature, and distinctive behavior. With its round body and characteristic black spots, this fish is a real eye-catcher for any enthusiast of a lively reef aquarium.

Character and behavior

The Arothron nigropunctatus, also known as the dogface puffer, is an intelligent fish that quickly recognizes who is feeding it. It often swims curiously along the glass and is generally peaceful towards other fish of similar size. However, its powerful beak, with which it cracks hard shells, must be taken into account.

• Remarkably social and curious character
• Can be held individually or together with robust fellow residents
• Not suitable for aquariums with small, fragile species or invertebrates

Care and housing

This pufferfish requires a spacious marine aquarium with sufficient swimming space and hiding places. Due to its growth and active behavior, an aquarium of 400 liters or more is recommended. Ensure stable water quality and a varied diet including crustaceans, mussels, and shrimp.

• Minimum aquarium volume: 400 liters
• Temperature: 24-26°C
• pH value: 8.1 - 8.4
• Not reef-safe: eats small crustaceans and snails

Nutrition and health

The blackspotted puffer has strong teeth that grow continuously. It is therefore important to regularly offer hard foods, such as crabs or mussels, so that the teeth wear down naturally. This diet keeps the fish healthy and active.

• Feed a varied diet: shellfish, shrimp, fish, and special puffer sticks.
• Ensure variety and sufficient solid food
• Note: never feed exclusively with soft food
