CO2 fertilization is the addition of (gaseous) CO2 to the aquarium water. The most important reason to add CO2 to the aquarium water is to provide the aquarium plants with sufficient CO2. Plants need this CO2 for their photosynthesis and is the most important nutrient for plants. Another function of CO2 in the water is that the amount of CO2 in the aquarium water (together with the carbonate hardness) determines the PH value of the water. By adding CO2 to the water it is therefore possible to control the PH value. In practice, the aforementioned two functions are very dependent on each other and the main reason for applying CO2 fertilization will relate to the plants, whereby the PH regulation by means of CO2 is a pleasant side effect.

If there is no longer any free CO2 in the aquarium, a large number of aquarium plants can still survive by absorbing CO2 from the carbonates in the aquarium. However, the consequence of this is that the carbonate hardness of the aquarium will decrease and the PH value will rise sharply. A number of plants will also find it increasingly difficult. For example, plants that naturally live in acid water often have difficulty absorbing CO2 from the carbonates in the aquarium, while plants that naturally live in alkaline water often absorb the CO2 from the carbonates in the aquarium.

It is known that by absorbing CO2 from the carbonates in the aquarium water, water values can be achieved that are harmful to the fish. The aquarium water also loses its buffering capacity if the carbonate hardness is too low, which can make the aquarium environment very unstable.
