AquaHolland CO2 bottle of 2500 ml. - gray - filling weight 2.0 kg. - stuffed up. CO2 fertilization is the addition of (gaseous) CO2 to the aquarium water. The most important reason to add CO2 to the aquarium water is to provide the aquarium plants with sufficient CO2. Plants need this CO2 for their photosynthesis and is the most important nutrient for plants. Another function of CO2 in the water is that the amount of CO2 in the aquarium water (together with the carbonate hardness) determines the PH value of the water. By adding CO2 to the water it is therefore possible to control the PH value. In practice, the aforementioned two functions are very dependent on each other and the main reason for applying CO2 fertilization will relate to the plants, whereby the PH regulation by means of CO2 is a pleasant side effect.
