A UV unit is used to kill floating algae, floating bacteria and parasites, which results in clearer water. Killing parasites is very important in a (sea) aquarium with sensitive fish. Think of fish in a sea aquarium. These fish are very sensitive to parasites in case of stress. If you reduce parasites by means of a UV unit, the chance of contamination of the fish is much smaller.
